padPellets and Formulated Diets

Pellets should make up approximately 90% of your bird's diet. The remaining 10% can be anything your bird enjoys eating - fruits, vegetables, table foods, meat, commercial treats, and more. As everyone knows, no chocolate, and no avacados. Pellets are designed to provide balanced nutrition, providing all of the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients in the correct amounts and ratios.

Birdie Tip: Switching your bird to a pellet diet can be simple. We recommend that you introduce the food in a high dish and limit the food normally fed. Getting your bird to recognize the pellets as food is the first major hurdle. Pretend to eat the food or give the food to another bird in front of your bird. For detailed switching instructions, please see the article "How and Why to Switch You Bird to Pellets" in our Avian Care Information section.

Bird Brain Information: Pigeons and doves (Columbidae) produce crop milk to feed their young. The crop mil does not contain any calcium or carbohydrates; only protein and fat. Squab (baby doves and pigeons) grow very fast on this diet. Penguins and flamingos also produce crop milk for their young.

TOP pellets are an important part of a complete diet. Feed approximately as much as your bird will consume in a day. Some days birds will eat more than others so the amount will fluctuate. Discard the remainder and feed fresh pellets each time. Consult your avian veterinarian if you have any specific diet related concerns. Although an excellent source of protein, vitamins and minerals, we believe that no pellet can provide 100% of a bird’s nutritional needs. Please be sure to feed vegetables, fruits, nuts, and some seeds for a varied diet.
